FEMA Bulletin1

http://www.fema.gov/library/viewRecord.do?id=1579 This Link is to FEMA’s Technical Bulletin 1, of 2008.  It contains information on flood venting, pages E16 through E21.  Here you will discover Section 60.3 on flood plain management, the permitting process, criteria for flood venting in Safety Hazards in Flood Prone Areas, it discusses criteria for use of a recreational vehicle, of interest to us while building out house.

This is part of the NFIP regulations, the national flood insurance program regulations.

Click that link above to go straight to these regs.  It’s the floodplain bible, along with the FIRM maps, flood insurance rate maps.  There is a site too called http://www.floodsmart.gov/floodsmart/?gclid=CK-vndDYtK8CFQRgTAodlWQYDw floodsmart dot gov, the official NFIP site.

This small map is called a FIRMette, and you can make one of your property from your FIRM, flood insurance rate map.  If you go past the white square in the direction of the pointing arrow to the right, you will see the word river.  Notice above the word river, lines indicating structures forcing the river to run in the channel itself.  Even though the 1 1/2 acres is in the gray are of the floodzone, water never inundated it as shown by the map.  The hundred year flood did make it to the lower 1/3 though, so with confidence we will build a new home here based on this FEMA map.  Cheers, bd
